Discovery Parks Warrnambool (Gunditjmara country) - Accessibility Review

wviewing close up white timber railing on 3 sdes of a balony. a brown ttimber look ramp wraps around corner. the sliding doors to entrance of cabin from ramp and balcony is shown

This is possibly the best accessible accommodation where we could socialise as well as have space for the ever-necessary assistive tech that we’ve stayed in. After a 2 year gap Gaz and I met great friends that are travelling around our fair land.

As I need to bed height clearance to accommodate my transfers via a lift hoist, Ray, the manager, was very understanding and immediately accommodating. He purchased brand new legs that gave us a clearance of 14cm. Now future travellers can be assured of great bed clearance.

WEBSITE | BOOKING:

WHAT WORKED

 ·      The website refreshingly has the Deluxe Access Cabin listed with the all important photos show casing the accessibility of the cabin space.

·      Ability to enquire

·      Phone contact available

WHAT DIDN’T WORK :

·      The addition of measurements is very important to many with a disability

PARKING:

Perfect. Straight in front of the cabin with no roofed carport so plenty of room for rear door opening. We needed my portable ramp to come down the gutter to access the park by wheelchair, however. To exit the Kia we backed up to the kerb with easily enough space for me off-load. The ramp to the cabin is smooth and perfect gradient and 1500mm wide.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

WHAT WORKED:

·      The space around the bed,

·      A large enough area for suitcases and parking equipment

·      The size of the bathroom 400mm x 1850mm

·      The split system heater/cooling

·      The wide doorways 950mm external and 850mm bathroom cavity

·      An accessible undercover decking straight from the cabin 2650mm x 3600mm

·      Roll under kitchen sink 650mm space

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

·      Height of the washbasin wasn’t usable for me as it was too low. However, maybe perfect for a manual chair user

·      The higher kitchen cupboards and the cupboard our inaccessible for those in wheelchairs

OTHER COMMENTS:

We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing and inclusive stay and looking forward to returning

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE:

I look at the ways in which businesses present an overall inclusive experience for their patrons. While I focus on mobility access I hope to get ideas from you and others to add observations relating too other disabilities. I take a comprehensive look at everything from initial website experience to staff attitudes. I do not comment on food (except sometimes if it’s super fab I might not be able to help myself) as you can have the joy of making up your own mind on that.

Happy accessible travelling and playing.
