Gary Watson on being an informal primary carer

Since I was 16, Gary has been many things to me: my best friend, my husband, the father of my kids, a motivator, a travel buddy, a cheerleader, my confidante, the source of my laughter (and my frustration). A soul mate. I never expected we’d eventually have to add “primary carer” to that list. Doing so upheaved every aspect of our lives: careers, houses, hobbies, pets, holidays - everything.

This is the reality for so many Australians. Gary is one of over 2.65 million carers in Australia, a huge 11% of our population. Much of this work is unpaid.

For people with disabilities, carers are invaluable, but we rarely hear their stories or their perspectives.
